Core Web Vitals

Measuring the Real Experience of Your Pages

Summary

Core Web Vitals are a set of Google metrics that measure real-world user experience on a web page: loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability. The three metrics are Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). They are part of Google’s page experience signals and a practical benchmark for site quality.

Back

Core Web Vitals are Google’s standardized way of measuring how a page feels to the people using it. Rather than relying on a single speed score, they look at three moments that shape experience: when the main content appears, how quickly the page responds to input and whether the layout stays stable while it loads. Google relies on field data from real Chrome users, collected in the Chrome User Experience Report, and assesses each metric at the 75th percentile of page visits. The metrics complement broader page speed work and are reported in Search Console and PageSpeed Insights.

The three Core Web Vitals and their "good" thresholds are:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): Measures loading performance, the time until the largest image or text block in the viewport renders. Good is 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): Measures responsiveness across clicks, taps and key presses throughout a visit. Good is 200 milliseconds or less. INP replaced First Input Delay (FID) as a Core Web Vital in March 2024.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): Measures visual stability, the amount of unexpected layout movement. Good is 0.1 or less.

Why Core Web Vitals Matter

  1. User experience: Slow, jumpy or unresponsive pages frustrate visitors and can push up your bounce rate.
  2. Search visibility: Core Web Vitals are part of Google’s page experience signals. They do not outweigh relevant content, but they can make a difference when competing pages are otherwise similar.
  3. Conversion performance: Faster, more stable pages remove friction from forms, checkouts and landing pages.
  4. Shared language: Clear thresholds give marketing, design and engineering teams common targets.

Real-World Example of Core Web Vitals

A retail brand launches a new homepage with a large video hero, a cookie banner injected after load and several marketing tags. Field data soon shows mobile LCP well above the 2.5-second threshold, a CLS score inflated by the banner pushing content down and a sluggish INP caused by heavy third-party scripts. The team replaces the video with an optimized poster image loaded at high priority, reserves space for the banner and defers non-essential scripts. As new field data accumulates over the following weeks, the page moves into the "good" range.

How to Improve Core Web Vitals

Start with the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console and with PageSpeed Insights to see field data by page group and device. Lab tools such as Lighthouse help diagnose issues, but they cannot fully replicate real user interactions, so treat field data as the source of truth.

For LCP, compress and correctly size images, serve modern formats, prioritize the hero image and reduce render-blocking CSS and fonts. For INP, break up long JavaScript tasks, remove unused code and audit third-party tags; our comparison of Google Tag and Google Tag Manager is a useful starting point for tag governance. For CLS, set dimensions on images and embeds, reserve space for banners and avoid inserting content above what users are already viewing. Make performance budgets part of design reviews, especially for above-the-fold content.

Conclusion

Core Web Vitals turn user experience into measurable targets. Meeting the thresholds for LCP, INP and CLS makes pages faster, more responsive and more stable, which benefits visitors, conversions and search performance at the same time.
